Recruitment
What is recruitment?
Recruitment is the operational process of sourcing, screening, interviewing, and hiring candidates to fill specific open roles. It's the execution-focused subset of talent acquisition, where a defined vacancy is turned into a hire through a sequence of stages. Where talent acquisition is strategy and pipeline, recruitment is the active work of moving candidates from application to offer for the roles open right now.
Why recruitment matters
Every unfilled role carries a cost (lost output, overloaded teammates, and delayed projects) so how efficiently a team recruits directly affects the business. Good recruitment shortens the time a role stays open, improves the quality of who gets hired, and protects the candidate experience that shapes an employer's reputation. Poor recruitment shows up as roles that drag on for months, strong candidates lost to faster competitors, and hiring decisions made on incomplete or inconsistent information.
How recruitment works
Recruitment runs as a staged process. A job requisition opens an approved role; recruiters source and attract candidates through postings, boards, and outreach; applications are screened against job-related criteria; qualified candidates move through interviews and, often, assessments; the hiring team evaluates against consistent criteria; and an offer is extended and negotiated to acceptance. Throughout, an ATS tracks each candidate's stage, communications, and evaluations so nothing is lost and decisions are documented.
Example
A 20-person company needs a marketing manager. The recruiter posts the role, distributes it to relevant boards, screens applicants against must-have criteria, runs a structured phone screen, coordinates a panel interview with scorecards, and manages the offer to acceptance, all tracked in one system so the hiring manager can see exactly where each candidate stands.
Best practices
-
Start from a clear, job-related job description so screening and interviews evaluate the right things.
-
Use structured screening and interviews to keep evaluation consistent across candidates.
-
Move quickly at each stage, delays are the top reason strong candidates drop out.
-
Keep candidates informed; timely communication protects your employer brand.
-
Track every candidate in one system so decisions are documented and defensible.
Common challenges
Recruitment commonly stalls on slow scheduling and feedback, inconsistent evaluation between interviewers, and unclear role requirements that surface too late. High applicant volume without good screening also buries recruiters, while poor communication drives drop-off and negative reviews.
