Recruiter
What is a recruiter?
A recruiter is the professional who owns sourcing, screening, and coordinating candidates through the hiring process and advises the hiring manager on selection. They're the driver of a search (finding candidates, managing the pipeline, running the process, and shaping the candidate experience) while partnering with the hiring manager who owns the role and the final decision.
Why the recruiter matters
Recruiters drive both the speed and the quality of hiring, and they're the primary shapers of candidate experience. A skilled recruiter fills roles faster with better-matched candidates, keeps the process moving, and represents the employer brand in every interaction. They also bring market knowledge (what candidates expect, what compensation is competitive, where talent is) that improves decisions. In a competitive market, recruiter capability is a direct lever on hiring outcomes and on how candidates perceive the company.
How the recruiter role works
Depending on the model, a recruiter may run the full cycle (sourcing to close) or specialize in part of it. Typical responsibilities include partnering with hiring managers at intake, sourcing and attracting candidates, screening for job-related fit, coordinating and sometimes conducting interviews, managing candidate communication, and shepherding offers to acceptance. Recruiters work through an ATS and often a talent CRM, and they balance multiple reqs at once, which makes tooling and automation of coordination important to their productivity. Types include corporate/in-house recruiters, agency recruiters, and technical or executive specialists.
Example
A corporate recruiter juggling six open roles sources candidates for the two hardest, screens inbound applicants for the rest, coordinates a week of interviews, and manages two offers, relying on one connected system to keep every candidate's status and communication straight.
Best practices
-
Partner closely with hiring managers at intake to lock job-related criteria early.
-
Keep candidates informed and moving; responsiveness protects both conversion and brand.
-
Use consistent, job-related screening to keep evaluation fair across candidates.
-
Lean on connected tools and automation for coordination so time goes to sourcing and judgment.
Common challenges
Recruiters are commonly stretched across too many reqs, which slows every search. Fragmented tools, coordination overhead (especially scheduling), and misalignment with hiring managers on criteria are recurring drags on their effectiveness.
