Job Posting
What is a job posting?
A job posting is the public, candidate-facing advertisement of an open role, published to career sites and job boards to attract applicants. It's the marketing-facing version of the job description, where the internal description defines the role, the posting is written to make the right candidates want to apply. Reach and clarity of the posting directly shape both how many people apply and how well-matched they are.
Why a job posting matters
The posting is often a candidate's first impression of both the role and the employer, so it does double duty: attract and inform. A clear, compelling posting on the right channels brings in a strong, relevant applicant pool; a confusing or poorly distributed one produces low volume or high mismatch. Because the posting drives the top of the funnel, small improvements here (clarity, framing, distribution) ripple through the entire hiring process.
How a job posting works
Recruiters adapt the job description into a posting written for candidates: a clear title, an engaging summary of the role and team, key responsibilities, genuine requirements, and often the salary range (increasingly required by law in some jurisdictions). The posting is published to the company career site and distributed to relevant job boards and aggregators. Applications flow back and are tracked against the role, so recruiters can see which channels produce the best candidates.
Example
A company turns its internal designer job description into a posting with a candidate-friendly title, a two-line hook about the team's mission, a short list of real responsibilities, and the salary range, then distributes it to a general board plus two design-specific boards, tracking which source yields the strongest applicants.
Best practices
-
Use a clear, searchable job title candidates actually search for (avoid internal jargon).
-
Lead with why the role and team are worth joining, then the responsibilities and real requirements.
-
Include the salary range where possible, it improves trust and, in many places, is legally required.
-
Distribute to the channels where your target candidates actually look, not just one board.
-
Track source of hire so you invest in the channels that produce quality applicants.
Common challenges
Postings often fail on unclear or jargon-heavy titles that candidates never search, requirement inflation that suppresses applications, and thin distribution to a single board. Missing salary information increasingly hurts both trust and legal compliance.
