C-Level Jobs

What are C-level jobs?

C-level jobs are the most senior executive positions in an organization, the ones whose titles begin with "Chief," such as Chief Executive Officer or Chief Financial Officer, each responsible for a whole function or for the organization as a whole. Together they form the C-suite, the group that sets strategy and answers to the board.

Key facts

  • Also called: C-suite roles, chief officer roles, executive-level jobs, CXO roles
  • Report to: The CEO, or for the CEO, the board of directors
  • Scope: A complete function (finance, operations, technology, people) or the whole organization
  • Level below: Executive or Senior Vice Presidents, then Vice Presidents and Directors
  • Hired through: Board or CEO-led searches, often with an executive search firm; internal succession

What the C-suite is

The "C" stands for chief. A C-level title signals that the holder owns a function end to end and sits on the executive team that runs the organization. That is a matter of scope, not of title alone. A small company may give the Chief title to the only person in a function. A large company may reserve it for someone who leads a large organization through several layers of Vice Presidents and Directors.

The C-suite is defined by the organization, not by any external standard. There is no fixed list of chief roles, and companies add, merge, and retire them as their priorities change. What stays constant is the structure: each chief officer is accountable for one domain, the CEO is accountable for all of them, and the board holds the CEO to account.

Common C-level titles

The titles below are the ones that commonly appear. Which of them a given organization uses depends on its size, industry, and ownership.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO): the most senior executive, responsible for the organization's overall performance and strategy, reporting to the board.

Chief Financial Officer (CFO): finance, accounting, treasury, financial planning, and reporting to investors and regulators.

Chief Operating Officer (COO): day-to-day operations and delivery; in some companies the second in command, in others the head of a specific operating function.

Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Chief Information Officer (CIO): technology. The CTO usually owns the technology in the product or service. The CIO usually owns internal systems. Some organizations have one of the two, some both.

Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), Chief Revenue Officer (CRO), and Chief Commercial Officer (CCO): marketing, sales, and the commercial side of the business, divided differently from one company to the next.

Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) or Chief People Officer (CPO): the people function, including recruiting, compensation, development, and HR operations.

Chief Product Officer, Chief Legal Officer or General Counsel, Chief Data Officer, Chief Information Security Officer, Chief Compliance Officer, and Chief Strategy Officer: specialist domains that have earned a seat at the executive table in many organizations.

Titles can mislead. A "Chief of Staff" is usually a senior role supporting the CEO rather than a C-level position in the sense used here, and a Chief title at a startup may describe a founder's area of responsibility rather than a built-out function.

C-level jobs and the job architecture

In a job classification system, C-level roles occupy the top grade or sit outside the grade structure altogether, with pay set, in public companies, typically by the board's compensation committee rather than by a salary range. Below them, the level words run downward through Executive Vice President, Senior Vice President, Vice President, and Director. The uRecruits entry on job classification covers grade structures, and the entry on job role covers how responsibilities, as opposed to titles, define a position.

How C-level jobs are filled

C-level hiring differs from the rest of recruiting in who owns it and how it runs. The hiring decision belongs to the CEO, or to the board for the CEO role, and the search is usually confidential. Organizations use an executive search firm, promote from inside, or both; internal promotion is what a succession plan is for. The assessment is heavier on track record, references, and fit with the board and the leadership team than on tests. The process is often long because the candidate pool is small and most candidates are employed.

For the recruiting team, the practical contribution is usually the groundwork. That means a job description that states scope and accountabilities rather than tasks, a clear reporting line, and a record of the search that the board can rely on. The uRecruits entry on job description covers the document.

Frequently asked questions

C-level means the most senior executive tier in an organization, the positions whose titles begin with "Chief," such as Chief Executive Officer or Chief Financial Officer. Each C-level executive is responsible for a complete function or for the organization as a whole, and together they form the C-suite, the group that sets strategy and reports to the board.

Commonly seen titles are Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Technology Officer or Chief Information Officer, Chief Marketing Officer, and Chief Human Resources Officer or Chief People Officer. Many organizations add specialist roles such as Chief Product, Legal, Data, Information Security, or Strategy Officer. The exact set depends on the organization.

C-level is the top of the executive tier: the chief officers who own whole functions and form the executive team. Executive level is wider and usually includes the Executive Vice Presidents, Senior Vice Presidents, and sometimes Vice Presidents who report to the chiefs. Every C-level job is an executive job, but most executive jobs are not C-level.
