Boolean Search
What is Boolean search?
Boolean search is a search technique that uses logical operators (AND, OR, NOT) along with modifiers like quotation marks and parentheses to precisely filter candidate databases, job boards, and search engines. Named after mathematician George Boole, it lets recruiters combine and exclude terms to narrow a large pool of profiles down to precisely the candidates who match a role's requirements.
Why Boolean search matters
Sourcing often means searching across huge populations of profiles, and imprecise searches return either too many irrelevant results or too few. Boolean search gives recruiters precision and control: it filters to candidates who have the right combination of skills, titles, and locations while excluding the wrong ones, turning an overwhelming result set into a focused, relevant shortlist. It's a foundational sourcing skill because it directly improves the quality and efficiency of finding candidates, especially for specialized roles.
How Boolean search works
Boolean search combines search terms with operators: AND narrows results to profiles containing all terms; OR broadens to profiles with any of the terms (useful for synonyms and title variations); and NOT (or the minus sign) excludes unwanted terms. Quotation marks search exact phrases, and parentheses group logic. For example, ("product manager" OR "PM") AND (SaaS OR "software as a service") NOT intern finds SaaS product managers while capturing title variations and excluding interns. Recruiters build these strings to match a role's must-haves and run them across professional networks, databases, and search engines.

Sourcing a senior backend engineer, a recruiter runs ("software engineer" OR developer) AND (Python AND (AWS OR "Amazon Web Services")) NOT junior across a professional network, surfacing experienced Python/AWS engineers while filtering out junior profiles and title mismatches, in one precise query.
