What is algorithmic transparency?
Algorithmic transparency is the degree to which how an algorithm produces its outputs can be understood, communicated, and disclosed, to the people who use it, are affected by it, or oversee it. In hiring, it concerns being open about that AI is used, how it's used, and on what basis it produces results. Related to but broader than explainability (which focuses on explaining specific outputs), algorithmic transparency also encompasses disclosure, informing candidates and stakeholders that and how automated tools are involved.
Why algorithmic transparency matters
Transparency is foundational to accountable, fair, and lawful AI in hiring. When candidates, recruiters, and regulators can understand that and how an algorithm is used, its outputs can be meaningfully reviewed, challenged, and audited, whereas opaque "black box" tools make bias hard to detect, decisions impossible to justify, and oversight ineffective. Transparency also increasingly has a legal dimension: some jurisdictions require disclosing to candidates that automated employment decision tools are used and providing information about them.
