Plumber/Mechanic - PHVAC
As part of the Plumbing Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning department, the Plumber/Mechanic PHAVAC provides a productive work environment for the employees and systems of ETS. This is accomplished by efficiently producing and maintaining the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, food service equipment, water supply, waste water and fire safety systems.The Plumber/ Mechanic performs and leads repairs, troubleshooting, maintenance and installation of a wide variety of plumbing, heating, air conditioning equipment and other systems including systems for water, gas, oil, steam, sewage, fire sprinkler/prevention, and refrigeration-related plumbing.
Responsibilities (indicate 5-10 key responsibilities/tasks that effectively describe the position; List from most important to least important):
- Maintain, troubleshoot and repair major environmental equipment, such as boilers, air conditioners, Data Center conditioning equipment, chillers and large pumps as well as supporting environmental equipment, such as ventilation fans, air handlers and circulars, water treatment
- Maintain, troubleshoot, repair and install electronic and pneumatic environmental control systems and Energy Management System hardware
- Respond to routine and emergency situations, troubleshoot and diagnose equipment or system's malfunction using special testing instruments and gauges; repair, recommend appropriate alternatives, or call for additional mechanical assistance
- Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, alter and install plumbing systems, such as, fixtures, domestic hot and cold water supplies and sanitary waste piping and lift systems in adherence to codes
- Perform preventive and scheduled maintenance on plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment and facilities including welding and cutting operations
- Maintain, troubleshoot, repair and alter food service equipment, such as, steamers, icemakers, walk-in refrigerator/freezers, dishwashers and gas ranges
- Perform final set up and balance of systems and equipment to include air distribution and boiler efficiency
- Assist in controlling the inventory of parts, tools, equipment and material used; complete the necessary paperwork as required by state, local and federal regulation; record the repair and maintenance activities accomplished on each piece of equipment.
- Maintain, troubleshoot and repair equipment used in water treatment, sewage treatment and disposal
- Respond to routine and emergency situations, making an initial determination of malfunction; repair or call for additional mechanical assistance
- Inspect, alter, repair and install fire control systems including sprinklers, hoses, hydrants, extinguishers and report faulty equipment to the ETS designated safety coordinator
- Assist State and local regulatory and insurance agents during their evaluation and inspection of ETS facilities and equipment
- Hold and maintain a N.J. Master Plumber’s license to meet the local municipality’s and ETS’ requirements

- Efficient and cost effective repairs, maintenance and use of PHVAC equipment ( includes the efficient use of time and materials)
- Efficient and cost effective construction and alteration of PHVAC systems.
- Shared maintaintenance, organization and cleaning responsibilities of the PHVAC mechanic shop and all work areas
- Effective communication, documentation and time keeping concerning operations, work orders and maintenance of PHVAC equipment
All duties performed in a safe and workman like manner using safety equipment and adhering to all F&PM and OSHA safety rules including participation in safety discussions
Education, Certifications, or Special Licenses:
- A High School diploma is required.
- Must possess valid NJ State Master Plumber’s License and have completed a state sponsored plumbing apprenticeship or equivalent.
- Satisfactory completion of an approved course in air conditioning and refrigeration operation and service or equivalent experience is required.
- A valid driver's license is required.
Completion of an approved fire protection systems course is necessary.
Relevant Years of Experience Required:
- Four years experience in plumbing installation and repair or the equivalent technical knowledge level of the trade typically received through a formal apprentice program is required.
Or:
An equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is required.
Other Requirements (Specialized skill sets, behavioral/technical):
- Ability to read, understand, interpret and utilize blueprints, wiring diagrams and schematics is required.
- Basic math and literacy is required in order to operate mechanical equipment and follow maintenance practices, safety and procedural standards.
- Ability to handle and carry materials and equipment up to 50 lbs. in weight is required.
- Ability to work occasionally under extreme environmental conditions is required.
- Ability to perform manual labor activities including climbing to heights in excess of 40 feet is required.
- Thorough knowledge of working with mechanical equipment and tools is required.
- Ability to follow verbal instructions and written specifications accurately is critical.
- Ability to carry out assignments and work well with other employees is critical.
- Working knowledge of a wide variety of environmental equipment systems and electric motors is required.
- Ability to perform basic computer tasks for typical use of e-mail, intra/internet communications as well as energy management systems. Also the ability to create documents for repair and operation of PHVAC equipment is required.
- Thorough working knowledge of environmental equipment, plumbing, electronic and pneumatic control systems is required.
- Ability to perform complex troubleshooting using the latest equipment and techniques, knowledge of environmental equipment systems requirements, maintenance and repair is required.
- Assemble and dismantle scaffolding, ladders, heavy rigging and other structural devices in a secure and safe manner is critical.
- The ability to work under unpleasant or hazardous conditions to complete tasks is required. This includes confined spaces, use of ladders, flooding, odors, heat, cold, mud, rain, and snow.
- May be required to work overtime to meet construction, maintenance schedules or emergency situations.
- Required to wear uniforms that include designated shirt and pants, and use all PPE supplied by ETS to perform tasks.
The ability to operate a variety of hand tools, portable power tools, shop equipment, measuring instruments and automotive equipment is required.
